Statement from NYS DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos on the CharlesTown Mall Fire, Utica, NY

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is coordinating with the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Office of Fire Prevention and Control, State Department of Health, State Department of Labor, New York Division of Military and Naval Affairs, local fire departments, and other partners to monitor emissions from the CharlesTown Mall fire and evaluate any potential negative impacts on public health and the environment.

 

New York State experts trained to respond to situations like this organized quickly to monitor the area for threats to public health and the environment and keep local residents informed. DEC and our State agency partners will continue to work with our federal and local partners to ensure the air in Utica is safe to breathe. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available and enforcement actions will be determined if violations are found after a comprehensive investigation.
