Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Bridges and Tunnels today announced the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel will fully close to traffic on Sunday, Sept. 25, from 7:45 a.m. until approximately 3 p.m. to accommodate the City’s annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Event, commemorating the FDNY firefighter’s run through the tunnel to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Event preparations will take place overnight, with one tube of the tunnel closed from 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, through 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25. One lane will remain open in each direction in the remaining tube during this time.

Additionally, beginning at 7 a.m. on Sunday, access to the Manhattan-bound Hugh L. Carey Tunnel from local streets in Brooklyn will be blocked and motorists will only have access via the Gowanus Expressway.

This independent charity event begins on the streets in Red Hook, goes through the tunnel, and ends across from the World Trade Center site. The Tunnel to Towers Run retraces Firefighter Stephen Siller’s footsteps and honors those who died on Sept. 11.
