How to Respond to a Tax Department Notice or LetterNYS Tax Department Shares Security Tips During National Tax Security Awareness Week |
|
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance today reminded taxpayers to review and respond to all Tax Department communications. Any unexpected correspondence from the Tax Department may be a sign that your identity has been stolen. If you suspect this is the case, contact the Tax Department immediately to determine whether this has, in fact, occurred. Our customer service representatives are available 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 518-457-5181. If you receive a letter asking for documentation to support entries on your return, it doesn't mean that you did anything wrong. It's one of several steps we take to ensure that returns and refunds claimed are accurate. Our goal is to stop questionable returns and refund claims, not to delay refunds owed. The best way to communicate with the Tax Department is to request electronic communications for both Bills and Related Notices and Other Notifications as follows:
When you select both options, we'll email you when we issue your refund and alert you to any future correspondence. |
