OGS COMMISSIONER MOY ANNOUNCES HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH EXHIBIT NOW ON VIEW AT NYS CAPITOL

Free Exhibit Highlights Individuals Who Helped Shape and Redefine the Cultural Mosaic of New York

Office of General Services (OGS) Commissioner Jeanette Moy today announced a new 2023 Hispanic Heritage Month exhibit is now open to the public on the New York State Capitol’s second floor.

“OGS invites the public to visit the Governor’s Reception Room in the Capitol and view an exhibit that celebrates the ancestral pride, cultural heritage, and contributions of New York State’s Hispanic and Latino communities,” Commissioner Moy said. “¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana! Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

The exhibition focuses on individuals with distinct accomplishments in the arts, entertainment, journalism, and academia. Each of the trailblazers highlighted in the exhibit has a unique background and history that captures a slice of the diversity and achievements of New York State’s many Hispanic and Latino communities. Their originality has helped shape and redefine the cultural mosaic of New York.

Among those featured in the exhibition are 1600s explorer and first documented non-native settler of Manhattan Island Juan Rodriguez; author, poet, and winner of the  National Book Award for Young People’s Literature Elizabeth Acevedo; writer and National Medal of Arts awardee Julia Alvarez; Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT) winner Rita Moreno; Grammy award-winning musician Tito Puente; historian, writer, activist, and curator Arturo Alfonso Schomburg; and Afro-Cuban intellectual, advocate, and journalist Rafael Serra.

Also featured in the exhibition are Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Senior Research Policy Fellow for Arts and Culture Gonzalo Casals; educator, activist, and photographer Sophie Rivera; founder of Grupo Cultural Latinos En Rochester Evelyn D’Agostino; founder of the Pan American Musical Art Research Inc. and co-creator of Latin American Cultural Week in New York City Polly Ferman; artist Kenny Rivero; and Buffalo community leader, radio personality, and co-founder of the Agustin “Pucho” Olivencia Community Center and the Hispanics United of Buffalo Juan Texidor.

The free Hispanic Heritage Month Exhibition will be on view in the Governor’s Reception Room from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays through Friday, October 13. For additional information, visit the exhibit webpage.
