OGS ANNOUNCES NEW YORK STATE’S SUMMER STAGE IN HARLEM CONCERT SERIES

Free Thursday Night Concerts July 26 – August 30

RoAnn Destito, Commissioner, New York State Office of General Services (OGS) today announced the lineup for New York State’s Summer Stage in Harlem 2018 series of free concerts and events that will be presented from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building at 163 West 125th Street in Harlem.

“The Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building in Harlem is a great location to showcase the diverse music and talent that exists in this culturally rich neighborhood,” Commissioner Destito said. “We are excited to continue this tradition of free Thursday evening concerts, and this summer’s amazing lineup of entertainment is not to be missed. I want to thank our sponsors for their generous support.”

July 26: R&B Night
Summer Stage officially kicks off with a night of rhythm and blues, featuring performances by headliner Darien Dean and special guests, Miya Bass, Tiffany T’Zelle, and Legacy. Darien Dean is a soul singer who burst onto the scene with alluring vocals and a distinctive stage presence. Fed a healthy diet of hip hop and classic soul, this multi-talented MC, singer, and dancer honed his abilities as a producer, arranger and engineer to craft a unique and authentic approach to contemporary songwriting.

August 2: Latin/Salsa Night
Come salsa, rumba, tango and samba the night away at Harlem Summer Stage’s Latin/Salsa Night featuring dance instruction by Jeff Hudson and live performances by Mitch Frohman and The Bronx Horns, and Abrazos Army.

August 9: Caribbean Night
It may be Manhattan, but the music will transport you to a tropical island with palm trees and pristine beaches during Summer Stage’s Caribbean Night featuring reggae artist Elijah Rocq. Additional performers to be announced.

August 16: Jazz Night
Beloved by people for more than 100 years, Jazz spans decades of improvisation, instrumental virtuoso, and evolving tunes and rhythm. Jazz Night will feature a performance by the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra and swing dance lessons by the Harlem Swing Dance Society, which is dedicated to promoting and preserving Harlem’s signature cultural dance, the Lindy Hop, in its Harlem home. Additional performers to be announced.

August 23 Gospel Night
All are invited to the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building for an evening of inspiring gospel music with headliner Ernest Billups and the Tribe of Levi and special gusts Gary Samuels & Prayzn Hymn Ensemble, the ARC choir, and the ministry of music from the Convent Avenue Baptist Church. Ernest Billups serves as senior director of music as well as youth council president at his home church, The Greater Refuge Temple in Harlem. He works with the church’s youth and music ministry team to minister songs to the church’s intergenerational congregation.

August 30: Family Fun Night
Get ready for a summer evening of family fun with a back-to-school theme and entertainment provided by several youth groups. The event will include participation by the Harlem School of the Arts, which helps enrich the lives of young people and their families through world-class training and exposure to the arts across multiple disciplines. It will also feature the Uptown Dance Academy, a premiere dance school for urban youth that exposes children to the diverse world of dance as they prepare for the professional stage.

All events are free and open to the public. Please bring your own chair.

No alcoholic beverages, coolers (defined as rigid insulated containers), or glass containers of any kind; no animals or pets will be allowed (ADA-defined service animals are permitted). Any type of recording of the performance or presentation is prohibited without prior written consent.

A special thank you to the 2018 Summer Stage in Harlem sponsors: HealthFirst, WellCare, New York State of Health, The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, and WBLS.
