Finishing Trades Recruit Apprentices

Albany, NY (March 9, 2021) - The Finishing Trades Institute of New York at Albany will conduct a recruitment from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022 for five Glazier apprentices; five Painter, Decorator & Paperhanger apprentices; and five Painter and Decorator (Structural Steel Bridges) apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the fifteen openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for three recruitment regions - the Capital District, Mohawk Valley, and North Country regions.

Applications can be obtained by appointment only by calling the Finishing Trades Institute of New York at Albany at (518) 355-4840. Applications will not be available on national holidays. All applications must be filled out on the premises at 191 Broadway, Menands, NY.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. A valid driver’s license and Social Security Card required after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof required at time of application.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.
  • For the Glazier trade, must be able to lift and carry 50-100 lbs. repeatedly throughout the day. For the Painter, Decorator & Paperhanger, and Painter and Decorator (Structural Steel Bridges) trades, must be able to lift and carry 50-75 lbs. repeatedly throughout the day.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
